More Fashion Terms

Keep exploring the vocabulary of style with these everyday fashion terms:

Aesthetic

The overall visual mood or style identity of an outfit or wardrobe — for example romantic, minimalist or vintage — created by the combination of colors, fabrics, shapes and details.

Athleisure

Athletic clothing worn as everyday fashion: leggings, hoodies, sneakers and sports-inspired pieces styled for comfort outside the gym. See how it works in our casual sporty outfit ideas.

Capsule Wardrobe

A small, carefully chosen set of versatile pieces that all combine with each other, so a limited closet produces many different outfits.

Chic

Effortlessly stylish and elegant; an outfit that looks polished without appearing to try too hard.

Color Palette

The planned range of colors used across an outfit or a wardrobe. Sticking to a palette makes pieces easier to mix and match.

Ensemble

A complete outfit worn together as a coordinated whole, including clothing and accessories.

Layering

Wearing several garments on top of each other — for example a tee under a shirt under a jacket — for warmth, depth and styling flexibility.

Minimalism

A style approach built on simplicity: clean lines, neutral colors, few accessories and nothing unnecessary.

Monochrome

An outfit built from a single color or shades of one color, such as head-to-toe black or different tones of beige.

Old Money Aesthetic

A quiet-luxury style based on timeless, tailored pieces, natural fabrics and neutral colors, without visible logos. Explore it in our guide to old money outfits for women.

Silhouette

The outline or overall shape an outfit creates on the body — for example A-line, fitted, oversized or hourglass.

Statement Piece

One bold item — a bright coat, a printed dress or a standout shoe — that becomes the focal point of an otherwise simple outfit.

Tailoring

The craft of cutting and adjusting garments so they fit the body precisely; the word also describes structured, sharply fitted clothing styles.

Vintage

Genuine clothing from an earlier era, usually at least 20 to 30 years old. Retro, by contrast, describes new clothing designed to imitate an older style.
